Virtual Tour of St Mary's Church, Eaton Bray - Pages 45-46

Momentous events are hinted at in this roll, not least the departure of John Kirby in 1559, the year of the Elizabethan Settlement, re-establishing the Reformed Church, when clergy who refused to conform to the Acts of Supremacy and Uniformity were deposed from their livings. Did the appointment of a new Vicar in 1349 indicate that his predecessor had fallen victim to the Black Death in the previous year?

Jeremiah Radcliffe, Vicar from 1583 to 1586, was one of the translators of the King James (or Authorised) Version of the Bible, published in 1611.

A large slate slab marks the grave of Henry Stonestreet, who was Vicar of Eaton Bray and Totternhoe, and Chaplain to the Earl of Manchester, who died in 1714.

Further back in the north aisle is the Parish's Book of Remembrance in a glass case, recording the names of parishioners whose ashes are interred in the Garden of Remembrance and those whose Funeral Service was held in this church.
